An arm lift or brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure done to improve the appearance of the upper arm by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the underlying tissues. It is a type of body contouring procedure that can be done on its own or with other procedures, such as liposuction, depending on the situation. Arm lifts are very often done on people who have lost a lot of weight either through bariatric surgery or conventional means.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
There are different techniques that may be used during an arm lift procedure. Our surgeon may choose one depending on how much fat and skin is being removed. Our surgeon may tighten underlying tissues, perform liposuction to remove fat, and remove excess skin. The details of the procedure vary from patient to patient.
Most patients will not be able to return to work or school for two or three weeks after the procedure. During the first week, they should take short walks to prevent blood clots and stimulate healing. They should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about six weeks. It will take two or three months for the swelling to go all the way down. The patient will then see the full benefits of the surgery.
What are Embrace® Scar Therapy and Biocorneum®?
Embrace® Scar Therapy and Biocorneum are treatments offered by Remedi Plastic Surgery & Spa to reduce scarring. Embrace® Scar Therapy is used during the first month or so after surgery, while Biocorneum® is offered later on. Embrace® works by preventing the contracture that can lead to scarring, so it is particularly effective at preventing hypertrophic scars and keloids. Biocorneum® is a silicone gel that makes scars flatter and softer and, thus, less visible. Both treatments have been approved by the FDA.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Brachioplasty?
The ideal candidate will be an adult in overall good health with realistic expectations. They need to be at a healthy and stable weight, for weight fluctuations can undo the results of the procedure.
